Concept designs are frequently being unveiled at motor shows around the world. Some are completely experimental and are not intended to ever be developed for sale – they are simply made to demonstrate the manufacturer’s capabilities and design skills. Other car designs, although experimental or conceptual, are eventually produced. Some of the creations listed below may eventually become available for the general public, some may remain simply as prototypes.

Ford SYNUS: This tank-like vehicle was unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show, and was apparently designed with safety in mind. It features a lock-down mode which causes a steel shutter to close over the windscreen; doors that open with the spin of a vault-like wheel, bullet-proof glass windows, and a bullet-resistant frame. There is no rear window, the space is instead filled by an LCD screen.

BMW Concept X6: BMW have a few Concept X6 designs, the most exciting of which is the Active Hybrid model, which combines an internal combustion engine with electric motors, making it more environmentally friendly.

Volkswagen GX3: This is a three-wheeled roadster which debuted at the Greater Los Angeles Motor Show in 2006. It seemed to be a cross between a motorbike and a small car, and received positive feedback during the show. Volkswagen have declined to manufacture the model.

Citroen C-Metisse: This is a sleek, beautifully designed car which features electric motors in the wheels. It was introduced in 2006 at the Paris Motor Show, and may eventually be developed into a model suitable for the public.
